In Austria, the first Porsche car was hand made. It was the the 356/1, the only Porsche 356 made with a mid-engine, all other 356's had a rear engine and they were air cooled. The 356/1 was a 2 seater with a tubular space frame the entire aluminum body was hand beaten. The first Porsche had a 1.1 liter engine, making 40 horsepower and a top speed of 85mph. 1948 through 1950 their were less than 64 356's produced. During 1950, Porsche moved into a factory in Stuttgart, where they produced 298 356's at the end of 1950. In 1951, there were three engines to choose from, the 1100cc, 1300cc, 1500cc. All of them were air cooled. In 1952, the 1500 Super was the top powerplant it came with a synchromesh transmission. Only for Americans the America Roadster was created in 1952. It had no side windows unlike the regular Cabrio. The windshield could be removed for racing. Only 16 were produced in all. In 1953, the Speedster was introduced, it was a striped down cabriolet with a shortened windshield. It's price was only about $3,000. In 1954 there were six different engines. They were 1100, 1300, 1300A, 1300S, 1500, and 1500S. 1956, Porsche introduced the 356A and the 356 Carrera. The 356A had a steel body and a curved windshield. The Carrera had a 1500GS engine. In 1959, the 356B was introduced with a new body and Super 90 engine. The Carrera 2 started production in the spring of 1962. It's engine came from previous Spyders, it made 130 hp. There were about 450 Carrera 2's produced. Later in 1964, the 356C entered production. It had discs brakes, and 1600C, 1600SC, and Carrera 2 engines. In 1965 the 912 took over for the 356. For more than 17 years Porsche had produced over 76,000 356's.
