924
At first the 924 was going to be a VW but Porsche bought the car from VW because of their finaccial problems. Then Porsche introduced the 924 in 1976 to replace the 914. Porsche used the VW parts to make the 924 cheaper which is one reason why the 944 is better. The 924 had a water cooled, front, 2L fuel-injected engine. The engine was first tested at Audi. The VW powerplant was also used in the Pacer, Spirit, a VW Van, and Audi's 100 saloon. Porsche set the 1984 cc engine at a 40 degree angle. Power went through a torque tube to the transmission in the rear of the car to even out weight distribution. That improved the handling and made the car easier to drive. The transmission was a 4 speed synchromesh Audi. When the 924 was released in late 1976, it became Porsche's best seller. In 1977, the horsepower was raised to 110, and a automatic was introduced. A 5 speed was introduced using the same shift pattern of the 914. In 1979 the 5 speed became standard and the 924 Turbo, 931, was released and disc brakes were optional. In 1980, a new 5 speed was made with the more traditional shift pattern, the Turbo stayed with the older 5 speed because the new 5 Speed won't handle the extra power. In 1981, disc brakes became standard. Porsche had it's own front engined model, the 928 which appeared after the 924 in 1977. In 1987 the 924S was introduced, it wasn't a normal 924, it was a 944 with a 924 body and interior. 1987 was the last year for the 924 which was replaced by the better 944.
