959
One fast and safe Porsche, the 959. A 959 prototype was first introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1983. The 959 was a 6-speed, twin turbo, all wheel drive 911, with a rear engine like the 911. The doors and the front deck are aluminum alloy, the rest of the body is Kevlar plastic, which is very expensive, but very strong. In a crash test the 959 proved to be the safest car at the time. Only about 200 were produced. The twin turbos are at the rear of the engine, the transmission is a manual six speed, and a top speed close to 190 mph with about 450hp. The dashboard is almost the same as the 911 and 930, but with some changes because of the all wheel drive. The rear section is one piece, ther is no engine cover. At high speeds the spoiler adds downforce to the car and makes the car easier to control. Porsche built about 30 959's for US sale in 1987. All but one was shiped back. The U.S. refuses to legalize the Porsche 959 because Porsche will not give 4 959's for U.S. crash testing. One 959 is legal under a special clause that says that the car can't be driven on the street or raced on a track, only that it can be displayed in a museum in California. Porsche built two more 959's in 1996.
