The 944 was replaced by the 968. The 968 was almost called the 944 S3. The 968 was a 944 with flush-mounted headlamps, a new, better looking body and a new rear. The 968 had the 944's 3 litre engine with a few changes such as the Variocam system. The Variocam system altered valve timing at higher revs which increased engine output. Getrag six-speed gearbox was also introduced for the 968. The 968 was the last of the 4 cylinder liquid cooled, front engined Porsches. The interior is identical, the engines are similiar, it has the 50/50 weight distribution of the 944.Variocam causes lower exhaust, more horsepower, and more torque. The 968 was discontinued in 1995 and replaced with the Boxster. Only a few 968 turbos were ever made and I consider the 968 as the best front engine car ever made.
