Porsche started to sell the $45,000 Boxster in the USA in 1997 and it has been a Car and Driver 10 Best-award-winning roadster. The 911(996) uses the same gauge cluster as the Boxster. It's not near as fast and about 100 hp short of the 996 Cabriolet, but it is half the price. The Boxster is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 2-passenger, 2-door roadster. This 200hp, 2.5 L, six was Porsches first all-new car in almost 20 years. If you want to view or work on the engine, you have to put the car on a lift since you can only get to the engine from under the car, which can be a problem, and the window in the top is made of plastic instead of glass. Its mid engine makes better weight distribution causing better handling which gives you more control. It has two full-size luggage compartments in the front and rear like the 914, except it has space for bags behind the seats, too. The $3,000 Sport package includes: 17" wheels, cruise control, a better sound system, a remote control alarm, and a wind deflector that sits in between the two roll bars. Traction control is only $900, metallic paint is only $800, floor mats with "Porsche" sewn into them are only $90. All this and you can buy your Boxster for only $49,790! Unless you want to give it to me, I think I will stick with my trusty 944.
