History
Porsche AG is based in Stuttgart, Germany, and is family owned. Porsche has won the Le Mans 13 times, which is the record. Porsche was the first auto company to put ABS standard on all their cars.
1900 Lohner-Porsche electric car
1907 Ferdinand Porsche was at Austro-Daimler designing aviation engines.
1917 Ferdinand Porsche designs a six cylinder car.
1923 Technical Director, Ferdinand develops the Mercedes Benz SS and SSK.
1931 Porsche Type 7
1936 Porsche Type 22. Testing the Porsche Type 60 prototype (Volkswagen), the most produced car ever.
1939 Porsche builds the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg but production of the Volkswagen has to wait until after the war.
1948 Ferdinand Porsche Jr. starts the 356, the first Porsche, in the small town of Gmünd, Austria.
1951 A Porsche 356 Coupe wins its class at its first 24 hour race in Le Mans. Ferdinand Porsche Sr. sadly dies. Porsche moves to Stuttgart, Germany.
1961 Designs of a six-cylinder engine begin, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, son of Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche Jr., designs the body.
1963 The 2.0 L 901 was introduced at Frankfurt show to take the place of the 356
1964 The 901 is renamed 911 due to Peugeot, goes into production.
1965 The 912, a 1.6 L four cylinder, goes into to production.
1966 The Targa is introduced.
1969 Engine increased to a 2.2 L, Five-speed introduced. 912 goes out of production. The mid-engined 914 is introduced by Porsche and VW.
1970 Porsche's first win at Le Mans, the 914 is introduced.
1972 911 engine increased to 2.4 L.
1974 911 Turbo, 930, goes to production with the famous whaletail.
1976 Carrera 3.0 replaces the Carrera 2.7, the 912 came as a special edition, the 912E, and the 924 is introduced.
1978 The 930 gets a 3.3 L 300hp engine. The Super Carrera, or SC, is introduced with a 180hp engine. The 928 is produced.
1980 Super Carrera makes 204hp.
1981 The 936 Spyder wins at Le Mans. The 944 is introduced.
1983 The 959 is introduced at the Frankfurt show. The 944 comes to America.
1985 Slant nose option for Turbo.
1987 The 959 is put into production.
1991 The 968 is introduced to take the place of the 944.
1992 Special Edition American Roadster introduced.
1993 A new 911 Carrera with 3.6 L engine and a six-speed was introduced.
1996 The Carrera S is introduced.
1997 Porsche introduces the mid-engined Boxster.
1998 Porsche introduces 996, the first water cooled 911.
